Chris Deakin has been working with alpacas for more than a decade now, but breeding, showing and promoting alpacas in the UK was not his first career choice. With a background in corporate management, including several Managing Director roles, Chris was brand new to the world of animal care when he bought his first alpacas.
Initially, Chris was the owner of five alpacas, but before long knew he wanted to expand, and with a local owner retiring, he took on their herd of 55 on a 30-acre farm. Like many new alpaca owners, he found the learning curve was incredibly steep, but also incredibly rewarding, and today this journey gives him a strong understanding of the common problems and pitfalls that new owners experience perfectly.
Among his first herd, Chris had a mixture of studs, breeding females and cria, which allowed him to start breeding and selling alpacas almost straight away. Through his passion for the species and ever-growing knowledge about alpacas, Chris started to create a growing herd with exceptional quality alpacas. Two years later, he began showing our alpacas in some of the UK’s most prestigious show and has been bringing home awards ever since, including multiple national championships.
